Personal guide for Mongolian Immigrating to Canada

There are a six different ways to immigrate to Canada. You will need to decide which immigration program will work best for you. They are:

  1. Skilled workers and professionals - based on Education, experience and language skills
  2. Canadian Experience Class - based on experience gained in Canada
  3. Investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed persons - Who can start a business in Canada
  4. Sponsoring your family - a family member to join you here if you are a permanent resident
  5. Provincial nominees - settling in one of Canada’s provinces as a provincial nominee
  6. Quebec-selected skilled workers - to be selected to settle in Quebec.

I have developed following step-by-step guide on "Mongolians how to immigrate Canada successfully".

This information is mostly based on my personal experience; and should be quite useful if you planning to immigrate under Skilled Worker category and do it yourself.

It will give you an extensive idea on how the immigration system works, how you can avoid making disastrous mistakes, and how to avoid falling into immigration consulting fraud by education yourself first.

In resent years many Mongolian wanted to immigrate to Canada under skilled worker category.

Each year over 250,000 families around the world immigrate to Canada. These people came here with one goal-to Build a better life for them and their families.

It is relatively easy to get accepted under skilled worker category, if you have the proper training and education.

The Immigration Canada evaluate potential skilled worker immigrants under score system. Under this system you have to score at least 67 out of 100 points. The points are given to you by following categories:

  1. Education for Maximum 25 points
  2. Ability in English and/or French Maximum 24 points
  3. Experience Maximum 21 points
  4. Age Maximum 10 points
  5. Arranged employment in Canada Maximum 10 points
  6. Adaptability Maximum 10 points

Most people can get more than 67 points in their assessment. These are all done by you and available on official Immigration Canada site. You can visit their website anytime and test yourself on their online Self Assessment quiz for Skilled Worker.

Remember, if you are filing your application form from US, then you need to use regular application and send all your supporting documentation with it.

Don't feel overwhelmed, if the checklist is quite long. Just take your time and prepare all the documents as directed.

Now that you know you are qualified to immigrate to Canada under skilled immigrant, lets look into the actual process of your immigration.

To make it easy lets classify the process of skilled immigrant into 3 steps. The process is quite simple, if you plan ahead and know what you are doing.

  1. You need to fill out the application form
  2. You need to go through comprehensive medical exam and language testing (If you have completed your study in non-English school or French school)
  3. You will be called for interview if they have any additional questions.

Step 1. Filling out your Application form

Many of us think it is some sort of magic or mission impossible to fill out an immigration application. It is not! However, it is crucial that you fill out this application as accurate as possible. Later on you have to supply all the back up to support your claim.

There are ten common mistakes that we tend to make, even before we do start our process. So sit back and evaluate yourself whether you are already falling into any of these traps.

1.1. I am not sure what to do

Never doubt in yourself. If you are reading this article, chances are you are already know what you want. You have to start believing in you ability and getting your idea into materialization. Read the Instruction Manual for skilled worker immigrant, take the self assessment quiz, download the application forms, and start collecting all your paper works accordingly.

1.2. You have to have a Lawyer

Back then, when I stated my application process, I didn't know I have to have a Lawyer to help me. It was easy... Read the instruction carefully and fill out the application form as they wanted. It may take a long time but it is well worth the effort. After all hiring someone will cost you $$$$. What I know they charge anywhere between $2,000 to $5,000 dependingon their reputation on top of your regular application cost (each adult is $550 and kid is $150).

Reading 30 pages of instruction and spending 2 days of your life to fill out your application form for yourself is too much work for you then maybe it is ok to hire a Lawyer.

If the money is not an issue, the time is not enough then remember! Not All Lawyers are created equal!. Some will be good, some will be bad. But majority of them will charge you more than you think and will not do much work. They are thief protected by Law, since they themselves know how to get around without get caught.

1.3. Need a continue experience in my field

It is not true! As long as you breathing, living you are constantly learning and acquiring experience. In many cases you can pick up whatever professional training you are aiming for in very short time. For Example:

1.3.a. You are applying under " construction Manager" category. Let's see... When you were in school studying, you helped your uncle to build his summer house. You were the one who run for errand and make sure everyone had things to do and assisted in all aspect of the building.

Or you helped your school project to paint the classrooms or helped your family business in construction field. Even an occasional help for a friend to fix her plugged toilet gives you an experience which you never really thought about it. These are the things you do daily basis and you overlooked.

1.3.b. You are applying under "auto mechanic" category. Almost everyone in Mongolia knows how to fix car. You have helped many people or assisted your family members whenever they are in trouble. You know cars, love them and it is your second nature to fix things. Then you are officially qualified as an auto mechanics.

The bottom line is - nobody has no experience. We all have all kinds of experience along the way. We just have to sit back and think about our daily life and write them down on a paper.

1.3.c. You are applying under "Bookkeeper" category. You are really good with numbers and like helping people to balance their books. People who know you always seek your help and you volunteer your time to do their bookkeeping without second thought. You have been doing that since you were in University and still doing it. You know the General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and the in and out of accounting process. You are also qualified to say then an experienced bookkeeper.

So if you do some digging then you can see how experienced you are after all. Give yourself credit and write down all the things you did or doing now.

1.4. It is too long to wait...

Before you even have a chance to blink your eyes, years will go by. It is always better to start now than never. My own case took a two years to complete since I was missing some information. ( my mistake I should have supplied all the info in the first place). But most cases take anywhere between 6 months to 4 years.

If you are filing your application from Mongolia the process time is around 24 months to 32 months. However, if your are filing from US then the waiting period is less than 2 years.

Time always go forward... whatever you are doing start it early. We tend to procrastinate our tasks. Do it tomorrow. or next week or next month... Don't do that. Give yourself a time limit.

After you done all your researchand have all the proper documentation, it will only take about an hour to complete your application.

1.5. Paperwork is not for me

I hear it all the time. We always underestimate ourselves. You maybe not good with details or just hate dealing with it. Whatever, the case maybe it is ok. We all have that feeling of not want to do somethings.

Good news is that you have to just deal with it once. In some cases it is better to do it yourself than asking others to help. After all we are not writing a constitution or medical exam.

So go start your paperwork.

1.6. I don't know anyone in Canada

You don't have to know anyone in Canada to immigrate to Canada under the "Skilled Worker" category. You can do without one. As a matter of fact we all come here on our own. That is also why it is the easiest way to immigrate and gives many people like you and me an opportunity to immigrate on our own.

1.7. I have to be married

No. You don't have to be married and you don't have to have anyone. Whether you are married, single, women, gay it does not really matter. As long as you have the skills and the desire to be part of new culture and beneficial to others then you are going to be just fine.

1.8. My English is not good enough (or French)

This is a tricky one. But if can read this article and able to understand, the chances are you are ready; and more than proficient in English. It is also good to know that languagecan be learned continuously.

So don't get discouraged by not knowing enough. As long as can fill out your application yourself and willing to learn more while you are waiting for application to be approved.

Here is what you can do if you think your language is not enough. After you have submitted your application to Immigration Canada chances are you have to wait at least one year. During this time take some more courses on English or French. If your are intermediate Level right now then year from now you can be Advanced Level. Same goes with French. You can easily pick up some beginner French within a year. So give yourself some room to grove when you filling out your application.

Make yourself accountable by upgrading your skill one level higher. It will also motivate you to learn more and will be helpful after you arrive in Canada.

1.9. Don't have degree and not educated enough

Sure it will help to have a degree in your field. If you have one then it is good for you. But if you don't then not to worry.

Many people disqualify themselves because of lack of degree which is completely wrong. The every country needs all sorts of people.

People specially trained in trades are far more in demand than bunch of BSs and MAs. Don't forget that when you come to new country, you have to start your life from scratch. In the beginning you do whatever you can.

For instance: If you are some highly specialized Physics or Engineers then probably will need an especial license to enter into your field. That will take time and meanwhile you have to hold some physically demanding jobs to feed yourself. It could be a restaurant dish washer or housekeeper or factory worker. Whatever it is you have to be ready to take it, otherwise you will make it very hard for yourself.

On the other hand it is good news to those who knows how to use there technical skills along with their physical body. Each year Canada accepts thousands of people just based on these labor intensive professions where you do not require to have Higher education.

1.10. It will cost me too much

No and yes. It all depends on what you comparing to what. For example: getting one entry visa to Canada cost you $100 plus trip to Beijing (another $300) total of $400. Sometimes Embassy will refuse to issue you visa. The aggravation and expenses related to bureaucracy is far more expensive than we think. So why not get lifelong permanent visa for about $1,200. ( application fee + landing fee + misc costs), and you will never have do deal with them.

If you feel motivated enough now, here is the application form for skilled worker for you. You can also still use representative to do it for you. You will need this form to fill out. In any case go start your process now.

Step Number 2. Comprehensive medical and language Exam

Congratulation! You have read all the instruction manual, gathered all your data, filled out your application form, paid your fees and filed your application with Canadian Embassy.

Make sure to send your documents by registered mail such as DHL, FedEx or UPS whichever is available to you.

You will get your receipt after 4-8 weeks depending on their speed. This will confirm that they have received your application. Your immigration application is officially started.

You will get your file number starting B123456789, which you have to use it when you corresponding with them.

The processing time varies. So you can check their web site for up-to-date information on processing times at their office.

What Happens Next?

Then you will receive your next letter suggesting to go through a comprehensive medical exam. This letter will have a list of medical practitioners who deal with Mongolian Immigrants.

Take your language exam if you graduated from non-English school. Same goes with French. The letter will have a list of centers where you go take the exam.

Your police clearance letter which you will need to get your fingerprint checked by police.

Your all supporting documents such as employment letter, education diploma, marriage certificate birth certificate, and any trade diploma related to your skill.

All the documents that you need will be listed on your letter and you should submit them in one package no later than 4 months after you received that letter.

A visa officer will make a decision on your case on the basis of the documents you provided at that time.

How do I know what not to miss in my application?

It is quite easy. List all your documents and things you have to do and as you go through them check it off. That way it is easy to complete. Remind yourself that immigrate to Canada is the biggest step in your adult life.

You have to be responsible for your self or no one will. So take a charge of you life. Be prepared as much as you can be.

What you will supply to Immigration Canada will determine whether you will be accepted or not.

You know what, I change my mind, I don't want to immigrate

In this case you can withdraw you application. You can write a letter to the Visa Immigration Section. You tell them you want to withdraw your application form. They will return your application along with refund of fee.

Sometimes this happens. Things change, so does people. It is common.

What else do I need to know in this stage?

After you submitted your application, you may have moved or had a baby or divorced or married.Whatever happens don't forget to send them an update fax and keep your fax confirmation receipt.

It may not seemed such an important part of your application process. But believe me it is going to be if you don't do it. I have case on this which took me two years to clear it out with Immigration Canada.

It is very important to update them regular basis and keep all your fax confirmation receipt.

Step number 3. Finally, Here comes the Interview

Great job! You have passed the second stage. You are almost done. If they have called you for an interview, they want to meet with you in person and see you. They want to make sure that you are what you say who you are.

This is nothing to be scared. If someone wants to welcome you to their home, then they want to make sure you are a good person.

So it is very important to make a good impression to anyone you meet at first time.

Here is my personal tip for a successful interview. I learned it during my job interview training.

If you are male: Put your clean ironed white shirt, and black pant, shave, get a hair cut, and some clone (not to much).

If you are female: not too much make up, no gum chewing, no smoking, no excessive jeweleries, no open toe shoes, clean nice shirt, and skirt(no mini's).

These are things we never really think of but believe me it is very important. Think of your meeting as if you are going for your first date with someone you wanted to meet for 2 long years. You don't want to screw it up now...

You are done and soon will receive your skilled worker-immigrant visa. You will be asked to pay your landing fee along with your passport.
