Mongolia People and Society

Education in Mongolia

We learn in school that after 1921, the government of Mongolia launched new progressive program in education. Since then almost everyone in Mongolia learned to read and write. Today nearly 98% of 2.6 million people of Mongolia are graduated from high school, college or university.

Our generation in Mongolia have received the most comprehensive education and training. However, the opportunity is limited and market is saturated with qualified doctors, teachers, engineers, mechanics, and accountants where most of us have to look for either less qualified positions or work abroad.

Although, many new graduated students ended up working in low paying temporary jobs, parents and guardians still send them to colleges. At least this way they have chance to stay away from possible local gangs and could apply for jobs overseas after their graduation.

Jobs in Mongolia

Mongolia traditionally excels in jobs related to animal raising such as cattle, horses, camels, sheep and goats. However, these jobs do not necessarily suit everyone. This is especially true in cities and where many simply could not deal with all the hard work and extra costs that come with self sustained farming.

Job market in the city is fiercely competitive. Companies tend to hire young educated, good looking people with connections. In many respect it is normal. You can find ads on local classified describing: "women in early 20's, no less than 170 cm tall, good looking needed for reputable company bookkeeper position." It is strange to see these ads for almost all sorts of job posting where knowledge alone can serve the purpose.

Average salary in Mongolia is about $250 per month. The companies and non-profit agencies with international funding sometimes pay more.

Most jobs are not advertised. The majority of positions in any companies and government agencies filled internally.

Anytime there is change in government (especially after election), the new government have power to fire any officials and employee of old government including police, education, and health departments without much explanation. This creates fear amount government employees and leads to massive corruption among government officials and individuals.

Mongolia Identity and Its Challenges

You hear about all these songs from musicians and artists on missing their birth place, how they want to go back. There are many new challenges you also have to face, when you live in other countries and adapt to different culture.

These challenges sometimes starts from very simple thing like Mongolian names. For instance, Mongolians do not use surnames in the way that most Westerners, Chinese or Japanese do. Since the socialist period, patronymics - then called ovog, now called etsgiin ner - are used instead of a surname.  In many cases this causes a great deal of confusion for both Mongolian and other nations.

On the other hand we-Mongolian like to take things too easy. Majority never learned to keep track of time. Work hard and do excellent job; and think as long as we do good job then the showing up on-time or leaving work early is no big deal. It creates huge challenges especially, if you are new at your workplace requires you to be punctual.

Women in Mongolia

Historically women in Mongolia have played important role in all levels of society. Women considered equal to man in many respects. One of the best description of this matter is recorded in historical books of Secret History of Mongols where Chingis Haan takes his mother's advise and acted on it.

However, around 15th century Mongolia become influenced by other Asian countries where women were treated not equal to man. This gradually transformed Mongolia and by 19th century in Mongolia women were no longer equal to man... >>>

Mongolia Immigrants

After years of working and living abroad many Mongolians tend to immigrate or simply get lost and become illegal aliens. Those who left their homes very young are able to adapt to new culture easily, live easier. But those who had to leave their home in their later life, or have lost everything, or become terminally ill, or just have no family to go back to tend to live in fantasy state of mind.

Living in counties like Canada or US have its pros and cons. However, people tend to over look the cons. You meet with someone who just came from Mongolia, they have no clue what they will do to make a living. When you see them you usually see yourself. You know you were like that some point in life.

Now that you look back, you wish there were some guides or tips to deal with all the issues, so you could have avoided to make many mistakes. You can read my tips on planning your trip and How to Avoid the seven biggest mistakes Mongolian Immigrants make and what to expect when you come to Canada from Mongolia.

Hopefully when you read this information you will learn from it and use it to your advantage. Maybe help others who are in same position or have no time or Internet access.

Mongolian wanted to work in Canada

There are several ways you can come to Canada and work. Many people come here under temporary worker visa permit and live-in-care-giver program.

These people tend to have some sort of sponsorship from Canadian companies. If you can get either of these permits then after two years of working in that company you can apply for your residency.

For more information on that you can read:

Although these are very good programs and good opportunity for you if you have high school education, proper English and some vocational certifications. (in cases carpenters they might not need too much of English)
