How to avoid the Seven Biggest Mistakes Mongolian Immigrants make. What to expect when you come to Canada from Mongolia?

You made your choice and got your visa and can't wait to come to Canada. Your friends and family are so proud of you. You did it! You are the ultimate winner of the million dollar lotto!

Just wait... Take a break... Breathe... Here comes the next step... YOU NEED TO PLAN your actual trip. You have done 20% of your work. Now the 80% is coming.  Here is your guide on How to Avoid the Seven Biggest Mistakes Mongolian Immigrants make.  Many of us fall for it and here is your chance to learn from it.

Whether you are coming for temporary work, study or immigrate to Canada, be aware of these myths and assumptions.

Mistake #1-Everyone has to help you out.

Wrong. No body or even your relatives have to help you out. There is no entitlements here.

Just because You are Mongolian, You can't ask a Mongolian (who you just got a phone number from someone and don't know) to help you out. Whether it is picking you up from Airport, or driving you around, or letting you stay in their home for months, give you money and feed you until you can do everything on your own.

I know it sounds so inhuman especially if you are currently living in Mongolia and never before traveled and lived in other countries.

But think about this, what if I was in Mongolia; and asked any Mongolian to do the same for me? Could I just call up anyone in Mongolia that I did not know and they didn't know me? and ask them to pick me up from airport, drive me around, house me and feed me for months? NO. That sounds so insane. People would think I am crazy.

Too many people coming from Mongolia have this sort of mentality and often times demand it and get upset with you if you don't agree with them.

So just remember, NOBODY HAS TO HELP OUT. You are an adult and you are responsible for yourself!

Next time when you think about someone else not helping you out for whatever the reason, do not blame them... they don't owe you anything.

It is also for your own good not to ask help from stranger. What if he or she is an abuser or killer? You never know...

Mistake #2-I am the most important person in this planet.

Wrong. You are just like everyone else. Even if you were the president of  Mongolia, if you treat people with disrespect and act like the only important person in this planet and want to take advantage of the situation then you will be outcast.

Mistake #3-You can make money without working hard.

Wrong. Many girls especially can fall into this trap. As a women our society preached us to be a good wife and stay home and take care of your husband. Nothing wrong with that. As a matter of fact that is the best thing you can do if you can. (not if you are a high priced call girl or boy)

However, If you decided to come to Canada (or any other country) then you must abandon this thinking. At least for the first several years of your adventure. Trying to do things on your own and get a job, while it is very challenging, it is also very rewarding.

You can also look at it this way: Women and Man have an equal rights, so do the responsibilities.

Mistake #4-I was a manager, a teacher, a doctor, a boss and want to be one here right now.

Wrong. As I mentioned before my Canada immigration, there are certain jobs such as managers, teachers, doctors and bosses need especial training. You can not just enter into these job market just because you were one in back home.

You have to go through a mandatory training and obtain re-certification. I know a friend of mine had to go through engineering training for three years (including job search and cultural training) to get a job in her field.

So to work in your field you need to retrain yourself. It will take anywhere between 1-3 years after your arrival and decision to do it.

Mistake #5-I am older than you are and you need to listen to me.

Wrong. If you expect people to respect you, because you are older than them then you are wrong. People respect you based on how much you respect them. Respect do not come from demand, it is earned.

Coming from Mongolia and you meet with young people in Canada from all walks of life where you actually need to learn from.  Put aside your old thinking and start learning new ways of thinking.

If you drink the water, then you must follow the customs.
Mongolian proverb

Mistake #6 - You are younger than me, so you can not talk to me.

Wrong. Younger kids should be able to talk to everyone. Kids and Youths should be able to express themselves regardless of their age. As a matter of fact we tend to be old fashioned when it comes to talking to younger people.

Especially when you talk to your kids, be aware that they too have same needs and concerns as you do. Listen to them and try your best to be understanding.

It is also illigal to spank your kids or hit them. As a matter of fact they have more rights than the adults.

Mistake #7 - I can get rich quick, if I can work

Wrong. This is the most common myth. Many people coming from Mongolia has this false hope. Whether you are living in Canada, US, Korea or Austria it is not that easy to get rich quick.

It is true that people get paid more everywhere else except Mongolia. I heard people in Korea worked 12 hours a day 6 days a week to get paid $1000 per month. I heard people in US worked 12 hours a day 6 days a week to get paid $2400 per month. I heard people in Canada worked 10 hours a day 6 days a week to get paid $1600.  These are all labor jobs where you don't get much training and get treated like a dog.

I know it sounds good compared to a typical Mongolian salary of $250 per month. However, when you are working in Mongolia you are not working non stop. You can take your time, socialize with your friends, have some fun, get your personal things done while at work and it is not as stressful as you are just working.

Also you need to take all other costs under consideration. While you are getting paid more, you are also spending more on food (maybe $200), clothing ($200), housing ($500), transportation ($300), Telephone ($100), personal items ($100) which maybe total to $1400 per month at least.

These are the most common Mistakes or challanges people face when it comes to living in different county.
