Why meat processing is so important to Mongolian economy?

Thousands of years Mongolia economy was mainly based on livestock breeding, since it was an important part of nomad lifestyle. 

Why livestocks in Mongolia considered healthy and natural?

In Mongolia animals such as cow, horse, sheep, goat, and camel, have been raised out on a field as a herd. No hormones or chemicals used to feed any livestocks.

How do meat shops operate in Mongolia?

The Mongolian meat processing industry consists factories with its own slaughter houses. These small businesses engaged in the production of freshly cut meat to production of sausages and canned meats. 

How many meat processor or meat shops in Mongolia?

In Mongolia there are about five large and 65 small meat and sausage producers operating today.

60 of these businesses located in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. These meat processing companies consists of its own slaughter houses where they process their own canned products and sausages along with the fresh cuts.

The major producers are Makh Impex (formerly owned by state till 2000), Khatan Suikh, Tsast, Hun-Od and Munkhiin Bolor.

How much of its production is exported or imported?

Mongolia export around 10 types of meat and meat products: such as frozen beef, horse meat, mutton, canned beef and pet foods totaling $8.6 million. 

Base on market data Khatan Suikh takes up to 60% of domestic market of canned products and Hun-Od takes the rest.

The fresh meat and sausage is consumed by domestic market, whereas 95% of canned products are exported.

Rusmyasprom another meat processor which has no domestic market and only export their products. Companies such as Max Impex, Tenger export their products to Russia, China, Jordan, Japan, Germany and Holland. On the other hand Khantan Suikh, SG Group, Hun-Od, Darkan Impex export their products to Japan, Korea largely.

How do you classify processed meat when you export?

The processed meat products are generally divided into the following two categories:

    1. Cooked and smoked sausage
    2. Canned beef and mutton.

These products satisfied export standard and Khatan Shuikh Impex is a leader in this field.

Khatan Suikh is one of the few companies in Mongolia who survived the economic turmoil during the transition period from centralized economy to market economy in 2000. They were responsive to market demand and changing consumer needs. Khatan Suikh also was the first to enter in the domestic canned and packed food market in Mongolia.
